The ritualist looked at me, then switched his gaze to Rachel before taking in Piper’s position as well. “Now, who the fuck are you? And how about getting me out of the rest of this shit?”

I couldn’t help but grin. I was expecting someone dour, a serious practitioner, a man who had studied in contemplative seclusion for decades. Instead, this man seemed to be the exact opposite of that type of scholar. It was like he was hopped up on his own energy, and I wondered if the straitjacket was to keep him from escaping, or defining some sort of rune with his fingers, or if it was simply to slow the man down.

Either way, I could see no harm in giving him an answer. “My name is Simon, and this is Rachel, and Piper,” I said. At the same time, I made no move to free him from his restraints.

“George. Pleased to meet you. I’d shake your hands, but as you can see, I fucking can’t.” Then he kind of shook himself and fixed me with a piercing look. “Now, what the fuck do you want? And make it quick, will you? I don’t have all day.”

“I want you to perform a ritual,” I began.

“No shit. What type?”

“I want you to send me to Hell and bring me back again when I’ve completed a task I need to do.”

At my words, I felt Piper’s attention turn my way, and I just knew I’d said something wrong. But it was the ritualist who held my attention.

The ritualist’s eyes never left my own. He stared at me with greater intensity than I’d ever been stared at before. And I couldn’t help but think that he gleaned more than I wanted him to. That he somehow knew more about me than I was comfortable knowing.

It was an impression that he immediately confirmed.

“You are looking for the missing piece of that demon inside you,” he stated. It wasn’t a question. Somehow, the ritualist knew what I wanted.

I couldn’t help but flinch at his question, and looked to Piper, wondering if somehow the assassin had told him my purpose. But her expression was one of pure shock. If this man had heard of my intention through casual gossip, it wasn’t from her.

The ritualist—George—caught my expression and grinned. “You think I need someone to tell me that you have a demon inside you? What is he, not a soldier demon, he’s much too powerful for that. Let me see oh.… Oh, yes! He is an incubus, is he not?” He glanced at Rachel and Piper, and chuckled again. “Of course he is. And you have been busy!” He nodded to himself, as if he didn’t need my confirmation one way or the other.

I shot a quick question to Azrael. “How does he know?” I asked him. But the demon inside me couldn’t provide an answer.

George’s chuckling faded into nothing. “Do you really have to ask,” the ritualist asked, even though I hadn’t spoken out loud.
